Thinking NGSS and Literacy??

Hello all,
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are out! I’d like to share with you Understanding the Next Generation Science Standards MOOC through the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh STEMlab with Dr. Eric Brunsell. A MOOC is a Massive Open Online Course.  The course is free, but for a small fee students can earn a certificate proving their participation and completion of the course.  If you haven’t discovered Paul Anderson of Bozeman Biology on You Tube, he has a number of excellent short videos to help navigate the NGSS that will eventually cover all of the Science and Engineering Practices, Cross Cutting Concepts and Disciplinary Core Ideas.  I was a big fan of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) resources in the past and I continue to be with the webinars and journal articles regarding the NGSS.  I highly recommend joining NSTA.  The organization was a tremendous help to me when I was starting out as a science teacher.  I also recommend joining the Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers.  Their conference will be held in Appleton next spring.  NEW ChemShare has also been beneficial from the presentation on NGSS to listening to teachers bounce ideas off one another to learning about upcoming professional development opportunities. I'd be happy to forward you the contact information for NEW ChemShare if you contact me.  Sometimes it’s just nice to meet new people working out in the field.

Happy viewing,

Mrs. A

  1. Hi Cheri - I came across some of the sites you referenced as well and thought they were excellent. In particular, I thought Paul Anderson's videos on YouTube would be great to review before I take the PRAXIS II this summer.

Thank you for the recommendation about joining NSTA, I have been debating it for a while now.

I will have to look into the MOOC course more. I don't know much about it however; it sounds very interesting. I am always looking for a new challenge!

    Thank you for sharing,
    Shannon

  2. Hi Shannon - Thanks. I learned about Paul Anderson through NSTA. The NGSS MOOC may be more relevant for those with a classroom or in some type of admin. When it comes time to track PD, there are many MOOCs out there. Most of my recommendations are the same as they were in the secondary methods course, not much new to add this go round.
Good luck on the PRAXIS II!

  3. PS I think the NGSS MOOC is good for all science people in our class after viewing more content that has been unlocked.

  4. Cheri,

Thanks for always sharing your inside information with us! I had come across Paul Anderson's blogs previously, and I have to say that I found them to be the most helpful and hopeful resource out there right now regarding the NGSS. I watched one of the NSTA webinars with one of the NGSS creators, and was pretty underwhelmed by it. I could see all of the misgivings teachers had about the new standards in the comments they were posting, and I didn't think the presenter adequately addressed those concerns. Paul's videos, on the other hand, really focus on the positive aspects of NGSS.

You are a very engaged and involved practitioner, and your students are lucky to have someone like you in the front of the classroom. Good luck to you in everything!
